MobilKom, a.s., is a mobile operator in the Czech Republic offering fast and cheap mobile internet and voice services under its U:fon brand launched in May 2007. MobilKom’s voice and data services run on the CDMA2000 EVDO technology, which is a 3rd generation data network comparable in quality to UMTS or O2 CDMA. MobilKom’s CDMA network in the Czech Republic was built under a licence for national signal broadcasting in the 410-430 MHz frequency band, which the company obtained in 2006. MobilKom is a company of Penta Investments private equity group.
History
MobilKom, a.s. was founded in March 1993 as a joint-venture of Motorola Inc., ConnecTel Inc. and KonekTel, for the purpose of operation of public radio networks in the Czech Republic. At the beginning of 1993 MobilKom, a.s. commissioned its first trunk system (SmartNet) in Prague. In the following year the company started to operate a private trunk system for Třinecké železárny, and in 1995 in Brno and Brno area and in South Bohemia. In 1998, MobilKom, a.s. secured a permission from the Czech Telecommunications Office to connect its network with the public telephone network.
